UPC Election - Day One

By Kent d Curry
October 10, 2001

It was perhaps the most eventful election day in the history of the United Pentecostal Church (UPC). Freedom Hall, at the Kentucky Fair and Exposition Center, played host to 3,136 voting ministers (compared to 2000’s 1,230 voters) who came to elect the next General Superintendent and Foreign Missions Director, while also voting on a host of other national leadership positions.

The United Pentecostal Church International (UPCI) is reelecting/electing the directors of each division (they’re up for renewal every two years) on Wednesday, October 10, 2001 at their General Conference in Louisville, Kentucky. If no candidate receives a two-thirds majority, then the top three candidates are then in a run-off vote.

On Friday evening September 28, 2001, over three thousand young people from Louisiana, Texas and Mississippi gathered together at Burton Coliseum on the McNeese University campus in Lake Charles, Louisiana for what would be one of the greatest youth crusades in Louisiana history.  The service was led by Greg Albritton, Louisiana District Youth President of the United Pentecostal Church, and Jeff Hennigan of Dequincy, Louisiana.

The Un-Congress: The Best Thing to Happen to Twenty-somethings Since Youth Camp

By Jessica Leopold
September 24, 2001

In spite of the odds, over 60 college and careerers (CAC), braved the torrential downpours throughout the Midwest and made their way past ’Ol John's Ribs and 'Que and the Hardin Baits-N-Bullets shop deep into the heart of Kentucky for this year's 20/20 CAC Experience  (September 7-8, 2001) at beautiful Kenlake State Resort Park. (Full disclosure: the Retreat was sponsored in part by ninetyandnine.com.)

"I hope this isn't one of those retreats where the girls change their clothes and re-do their hair between every activity," one attendee commented.  Indeed it wasn't. In fact, it was the Un-Congress.  Jeans, jean skirts and relaxed casual clothes were the norm for most retreat goers.

Friday evening began with an array of finger foods served to the beat of Christian rock band Third Day's CD while people mingled, setting a casual tone for the entire retreat.

Youth Congress 2001—Venue and City

By D.J. Barnes
August 27, 2001

So, let’s first state the obvious: great preaching and great evening services. Of course though. What do you expect when you get some anointed powerful men of God to preach to a bunch of young people who are fired up for God? Besides that, though not as important, there are other factors that make a successful YC2001. I want to review two of them—the organization of the event and the city itself.

IBC Music Festival 2001 - A Time Of Praise

By Phillip Hampton
April 2, 2001

The cavernous sanctuary of Calvary Tabernacle in Indianapolis was packed to near capacity Friday March 23, as choir members, musicians, music ministers, and music aficionados gathered for a giant praise gathering during the 2001 Music Festival sponsored by Indiana Bible College (IBC).  A palpable sense of excitement and expectancy permeated the atmosphere as the worship leader led the large crowd in a few warm-up choruses.  Entire choirs, garbed in their ubiquitous choir robe uniforms, could be spotted across the auditorium, sitting together as a unit and responding to the goings-on as fervently as they hoped the crowd would respond to their ministry in due course.

Fans “Consumed” by Third Day Experience

By Cara Baker
April 2, 2001

The beautifully dramatic Akron Civic Auditorium, one of only five remaining atmospheric theatres in the country, was built in 1929 using a design from a Moorish castle with Mediterranean decor, medieval carvings, European antiques and alabaster sculptures. The auditorium resembles a Moorish garden and, if you look up at the sky blue dome ceiling, clouds drift across and stars twinkle.

Because of the Times

By Jonathan Walker
February 5, 2001

Because of the times thousands of ministers and their families gathered at this unique conference January 23-25 in Alexandria, Louisiana to acquire fresh anointing and renewed vision to impact our world with the power of the gospel.  For anyone pursuing political rhetoric or posturing, a trip to "Because of the Times" would be a waste of time, energy, and money.  This conference only focuses on God, not people.  Thousands of ministers from numerous Oneness organizations gather with an insatiable desire to pursue the deity and vision of Almighty God—a simple aspiration, with powerful results.

Acts Today—The Crusade in the Philippines

By Kevin Brown
January 22, 2001

I first heard about the evangelistic crusade in the Philippines in late summer of 2000.  Bro. Gordon Mallory, former (United Pentecostal Church) missionary to the Philippine Islands (PI), had visited our church and shared with us his dream about having a massive crusade there.  Having had the privilege to attend the UPC World Conference in Manila, Philippines, in 1985, I was excited to hear about how much the Filipino church had grown since then and the great things God was doing there.
