Behind the Scenes: Miracle on Azusa Street

The Play

Miracle on Azusa Street is a drama about an Episcopal pastor, Charles White, and his family in the early 1900s. He has a wife, Victoria, and a daughter, Angela who is paralyzed and in a wheelchair. The Rev. White hears about what’s going on in the Azusa Street church across town, and he decides to see what it is all about. He meets a physician there who says White might require his services sometime.

Lights, Camera… Fire! Inferno 2000

Inferno 2000.  No, this is not the name of the newest NASCAR Race, though the excitement (and smoke levels) are just as high.  Inferno 2000 is a weekend youth conference hosted by the Apostolic Church of Pontiac, Michigan.  For the past five years, the Apostolic Church of Pontiac has opened its doors to youth from across the country to experience Inferno, and unlike other conferences you may attend, Inferno is truly an experience.

Azusa Street - A Musical Drama

The early 1900s marked the Apostolic beginnings in the United States with the outpouring of the Holy Ghost as evidenced by speaking in tongues. Revivals broke out all over the Midwest and Texas. Then, one Bible school student felt a call to go to California. William Seymour journeyed to Los Angeles to share the message of Acts 2 and soon began preaching and teaching on Azusa Street. The revival continued for years at that location and was noted in Life magazine as one of the top 100 events of the century.

GC2000

Thousands of Apostolics “Celebrating a Century of Pentecostal Fire” descended upon downtown Birmingham, AL for the 76th annual General Conference of the United Pentecostal Church International (known officially as GC2000), which convened September 26 through October 1, 2000.  Having attended 13 of the last 15 GCs, there were numerous events that seemed commonplace; however, when the anointed Word of God is preached, it is far from commonplace.

NABQT 2000 - Retirement and Renewal

The first North American Bible Quiz Tournament (NABQT) of the 21st century will not be easily forgotten.  Erupting onto the scene of downtown Birmingham, AL, 72 teams from not only the United States and Canada, but also the Philippines (actually making it the International BQT) began their quest to have their trip paid for by the UPCI’s Youth Division by taking home the first place trophy.  It also ushered in a new era of Bible Quizzing as National Quizmaster Marvin Walker stepped down so that he might minister full-time at Tupelo Children’s Mansion and the church there.

Who, Where And When? MARC 2000

Rev. Jerry Jones' message title summed up the over-riding theme of Mid-America Revival Conference (MARC) 2000 which took place on September 6-8. The Who?  Answered by Irvin Baxter's message " The Role of the Jesus Name People in the New World Order."  He spoke of a people not willing to compromise and our role in the present and future to come. "God's Harvest Hands" presented by Rev. Charles Grisham discussing a vital equation Man + Method + Message = Harvest.

CAC Retreat 2000

Starting on the 8th of September, Lake Barkley State Resort Park in Kentucky served as host to more than the usual frolicking deer population.  A group of approximately five dozen CACers joined in the romp.  CAC stands for College And Career, and a few churches with Sunday school classes representing this oft’ forgotten bracket of youth and nearly so, were invited to participate.  This event was billed as a chance to enjoy a time of leisurely recreation, good godly discussion and the company of similarly categorized individuals.  The category can be broad, but the resulting well-rounded mix was a surprisingly compatible mesh of persons and personalities.

Bible School for Secular Students: E=mc2 Conference

The first ever E=mc2 Conference convened in La Jolla Cove near San Diego, California this past week, August 14-18.  As the mist rose and fell on the cliffs across the cove each day, 25 students from secular colleges throughout the U.S. met to establish, empower, enhance, equip, and encourage their faith.
